April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

|

As a law firm that’s been fighting for victim and families across New Jersey since 1939, Levinson Axelrod, P.A. has represented a number of courageous clients who’ve come forward to make their voices heard in civil claims involving sexual assault and abuse.

In solidarity with their fight for justice, we support Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2019 and help spread the word.

A Time for Supporting Survivors

Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) provides a platform to educate individuals and communities about the prevention of sexual violence and abuse, as well as the resources available to survivors.

SAAM, which began as a national Sexual Assault Awareness Week, was first observed nationally in the U.S. in April 2001. Today, it has garnered boisterous backing, with advocacy organizations such as the National Sexual Violence Resource Center and RAIIN leading the charge in helping people get involved.

Throughout the month, a number of events and activities take place, including:

  • SAAM Day of Action – Held on the first Tuesday of April, the Day of Action allows everyone to participate in showing their support and spreading awareness.
  • The Clothesline Project – A visual reminder of statistics often ignored, The Clothesline Project displays t-shirts made by survivors of sexual abuse and assault across the world.
  • Take Back the Night – TBTN is an international event where local communities organize marches, candlelight vigils, rallies, and survivor speak-outs.
  • Denim Day – Originating from a Supreme Court case in Italy where Justices overturned a rape conviction because the victim’s tight denim jeans implied consent, Denim Day will be held on April 24, 2019.

You can learn more about getting involved by looking for scheduled events and activities in your community, showing your support online, and utilizing resources from organizations like the National Sexual Violence Resource Center and RAINN.

Levinson Axelrod, P.A.: Fighting for Survivors. Fighting for Justice.

Levinson Axelrod, P.A. has a history of fighting for victims of sexual abuse and sexual assault who bravely come forward to share their stories and seek accountability – not only for the wrongful acts of an individual, but also the failures of schools, religious institutions, and other organizations that failed to prevent assault and abuse, and properly address allegations.

As a law firm that’s been fighting for victims and families across New Jersey since 1939, Levinson Axelrod, P.A. has represented a number of courageous clients who’ve come forward to make their voices heard in civil claims involving sexual assault and abuse. We have successfully litigated sexual assault in the workplace, by physicians and by clergy, with attention to confidentiality and sensitivity to the needs of the victims.

Amid the state’s current social climate – especially as it concerns the New Jersey Catholic Dioceses – support and awareness have been critical to passing new and better legislation.

Today, we’re thankful New Jersey is reshaping its laws to better support victims of sexual assault and abuse. SAAM 2019 is a fitting follow-up to the state’s passing of S-477, a bill that extends the statute of limitations for most assault and abuse cases, and gives all survivors a two-year window to file claims. It’s a victory for all survivors and their loved ones, and is expected to be signed by the Governor soon.
